Medical School Acceptance

Medical School Acceptance

Acceptance, rejection and wait list are the three ultimate outcomes of application to medial school. Usually, medical schools have to make more offers than they have spots obtainable in their class to fill each class. This works in the good turn. If a school has 100 seats to fill for that year they may have to extend 150, 200 or 300 offers to get 100 students to really attend their school. If the medical school is much esteemed, then they typically have to extend fewer offers to fill the class. If they are the backup school for many applicants who would rather go somewhere else, then they have to extent more offers.

Acceptance:

Celebrate the acceptance letters. Congratulations and all the hard work in preparation has paid off. Certainly one wants to get acceptance letters from medical schools, at least from one medical school. Acceptance letters are mailed within about 2 to 4 weeks from the interview date by most medical schools. A few schools inform students with a few days and some even take some or many months to tell applicants of their decisions. Some other medical schools inform most of their applicant pool at once like on a given day, rather than on a rolling basis.

It is typically given 10 - 14 days from the day to receive the acceptance letter from a medical school in the mail to make a deposit and indicate that the person is interested in attending there. Once the deposit is made and respond to the school, the medial school will hold a spot in the incoming class. Make sure to pay the deposit and have the school hold the spot. This does not mean actually have to attend this particular school in the end. Once made deposits at several schools with several offers, one can still decide where one really wants to study medicine, after considering all of the options. So, by making the deposit, one does not promise or commit to attend that particular school.

How long to wait?

For the majority allopathic (MD) schools, the deposits are generally only $100 approximately but there are exceptions with higher deposit amounts. The deposits are normally refundable or will be applied towards the tuition if one attends there eventually. Though, for most osteopathic (DO) schools, the deposits are between $500 and $1,000 approximately and are most often non-refundable too. Most applicants get some refusal letters. It is certainly hard when the first letter is received back is a rejection. But, do not give up. Some rejections are usual. Often, it depends on the interviewer. It may have nothing to do with the application or the personality. Be positive and keep applying. The hard work and dedication will prove its result.
